Wimmer leads 39 laps, finishes 9th
July 26, 2009Scott Wimmer, known for his short-track success, qualified the Fastenal Chevrolet in 15th-place and wasted no time coming to the front at the .686-mile oval. When the caution flag waved on lap 50 for an accident in turn 4, Wimmer had climbed to third.
In the ensuing double-file restart on lap 54, Wimmer dove to the inside of Keselowski and leader Ron Hornaday in a dramatic three-wide pass to take the lead. The Fastenal Chevrolet not only led the field, but did so in dominating fashion, as Wimmer opened up a 3.5-second lead on the second-place runner, and proceeded to lead the next 39 laps.
Another caution slowed the field on lap 92 and Wimmer radioed crew chief Brian Campe. The No. 5 needed more front grip to get a better run off the corners. Wimmer brought the Fastenal Chevy to pit road for four tires, fuel, and a chassis adjustment, but relinquished the lead in the process. The No. 5 returned to the track in second place.
The Fastenal team did its best to adjust on the front of its Chevrolet and kept Wimmer inside the top-five for the next 63 laps. In the final laps however, Wimmer drifted back through the field with a tight condition, and finished the night in ninth place.
"First off, I want to thank Campe and all the guys for setting up such a strong Fastenal Chevrolet," Wimmer said after earning his second top-10 finish in three races with JRM. "Our car was great early on in the race and they did an excellent job anticipating the track changes tonight. I can't tell you how good it felt to keep the Fastenal Chevy out front for those 39 laps.
"Our Fastenal Chevy was good enough to run with the leaders all night, but there toward the end we just got really tight and the longer the run went, the more we seemed to fall off. We're certainly happy with a ninth-place finish, but hopefully next week at Iowa we can improve on that even more. Next week we'll be looking for a top-five showing.
