Top 10 Finish in Iowa for Edwards
Newton, Iowa. (July 31, 2010) –Carl Edwards performed another weekend of double duty racing in Pocono and Iowa. Before Edwards arrived for qualifying Saturday afternoon, fellow Roush Fenway Racing teammate, Erik Darnell suited up and ran the No. 60 Fastenal Ford in the only practice session Saturday morning. Edwards qualified 16th after missing the only practice session and would eventually cross the finish line in 10th place.
“The entire team worked really hard this weekend doing everything that they could, but we just weren’t that good and it’s certainly not for a lack of effort” Edwards said. “It is such a momentum race track that we needed to be faster in the center of the corners. Seeing all these fans at the track means a lot to us who made the trip from Pocono today. To see the grandstands completely full especially with everyone from Fastenal tonight is pretty cool.”
Struggling with handling issues during the entire race, Edwards was able to run in the top-10 during the majority of the 250 lap event.
Early in the night Edwards radioed into crew chief, Drew Blickensderfer saying that he needed a little front grip in the center. When the first pit stop of the night occurred on lap 45, Blickensderfer and the Fastenal crew went to work putting one round of wedge into the right rear, taking one pound of air pressure out of the right front tire, putting on four fresh tires and toping off with fuel. Edwards entered the pits running 10th and would exit the pits running 10th. Over the next 30 laps Edwards would be able to maneuver the No. 60 up to the sixth position before pitting again.
Blickensderfer and the crew would make significant adjustments to the car about three more times throughout the race helping the handling of the car a little each time.
In the end Kyle Busch held off the entire field to lead the most laps of the night and cross the finish line for his ninth Nationwide Series victory of the season. Edwards managed to be the highest finishing Roush Fenway Racing driver, finishing 10th. Teammates Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Paul Menard and Colin Braun finished 14th, 16th and 32nd.
Next Saturday night, Carl Edwards and the No. 60 Fastenal team will head to the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York to battle their second road course of the year at Watkins Glen. Catch all of the action on ESPN Saturday, August 7, starting at 1:30 p.m. ET.
