Scott Wimmer Preview - Richmond
TEAMING WITH JRM – Friday’s race will be Wimmer’s fifth with JR Motorsports and primary sponsor Fastenal in 2009. Earlier this season, Wimmer earned top-10 finishes at Darlington and O’Reilly Raceway Park while driving for JRM, his best finishes of the year. At O'Reilly Raceway Park, Wimmer led 39 laps, a season-high lap statistic for both Wimmer and the No. 5 team.
RICHMOND RINGER – In 13 starts, Wimmer has two top-five and nine top-10 finishes at Richmond International Raceway. He has led 47 laps, completed 99.9 percent (3251 of 3255) of laps, and has an average finish of 10.0. In this event last year, Wimmer finished second to race winner Carl Edwards.
POLE AWARD – The No. 5 team earned its first pole of the season last week at Atlanta Motor Speedway with Dale Earnhardt Jr. behind the wheel. The team’s previous pole came at New Hampshire Motor Speedway with driver Landon Cassill in 2008.
SHORT TRACK INFO – In the three short-track races the No. 5 has competed in this season (Richmond, Milwaukee and ORP), the team earned one top-10 finish at Richmond with Mark Martin. The team qualified inside the top 10 for all three races.
NO. 5 CHEVROLET UPDATE – The No. 5 Chevy has competed in 18 races in 2009 and earned four top-five and nine top-10 finishes. The 5 car has led a total of 98 laps this season. Its average finish is 15.6 and average start is 10.6.
CHASSIS INFO – The No. 5 Fastenal team will run chassis 444. It is the same chassis that raced at Milwaukee and Iowa and finished 18th and 31st, respectively.
WIMMER (thoughts on working with JRM this weekend) – “It’s exciting to be working with JR Motorsports this weekend. As a team, we’ve had strong runs nearly every race, but we just haven’t had the finishes to show for it. But we’ve put that behind us and are focusing on the positives. I hope we can carry the team’s momentum from their strong run at Atlanta with Dale Jr. into this weekend at Richmond.”
WIMMER (experience at Richmond) – “Each week we’re capable of running up front with the leaders, and that’s what we’re focused on for Richmond. The JRM team had a good run here in the spring, and I was able to finish second in this race last year, so hopefully we can put all the pieces together and contend for a win. I only have two more races with JRM, so we’re going to do our best to get the No. 5 Fastenal Chevy to victory lane before the year is out.”
WIMMER (on short-track racing) – “You need to approach this weekend like any other short-track race. Track position will be important, as always. You have to have a decent handling car to roll the center of the corner and carry speed off on exit. I know Brian Campe (crew chief) and the guys will put together a good package for us and a have solid pit strategy in place.”
