Richmond Post Race
September 14, 2009In his fifth race for JR Motorsports, Wimmer qualified 17th for Friday’s race – only the second time he started outside the top-15 in the Fastenal car.
Fighting a loose condition, Crew chief Brian Campe used the second caution of the race on lap 42 to make adjustments to his car. Wimmer came in the pits in 14th, but left in 11th after quick work by the Fastenal pit crew.
By lap 66, Wimmer cracked the top 10. But keeping the Fastenal Chevy inside the top 10 with a loose condition that never went away proved to be a daunting task. Wimmer fell back to 17th by lap 94. The Fastenal crew attempted to remedy the car's handling with a major chassis adjustment, in addition to four tires and fuel, under the race's third caution on lap 127.
Wimmer restarted in 19th, but the longer he raced under green-flag conditions, the more loose the Fastenal Chevrolet became. The team survived two more cautions over the final 118 laps to finish 18th, one lap behind the leaders.
"This was a tough night for the Fastenal team," Wimmer said. "Our Fastenal Chevy was so loose at times it was a handful to keep under me. We made a bunch of adjustments during out pit stops, but we couldn't seem to shake the loose condition. The Fastenal crew had some really fast stops tonight, and gained me some spots on pit road. I'm really proud of them, they never gave up. We'll just focus on Kansas and look to have a better run there. It will be my last race with JRM, so we want to have a strong showing."
