Newman Finishes 13th at Bristol

August 22, 2009

Newman began the 250-lap event in the 10th position – his third top-10 starting spot in four races with JR Motorsports.

By lap 48, Newman slid into eighth place.  In an effort to gain critical track position, Newman didn’t come down pit road during the race’s first five cautions.  He worked the No. 5 as high as sixth by lap 115, while diagnosing a tight condition on the car.

Newman brought the Fastenal Chevy to pit road for the team’s first stop on lap 139 while under caution. The team changed four tires, added fuel and made a chassis adjustment in attempt to loosen up the chassis.

Crew chief Brian Campe and the Fastenal team anticipated the track cooling and, as a result, see the handling improve.  However, Newman radioed the crew that the car was becoming increasingly tight.

With 10 laps to go, Newman gained on the No. 15 of Michael Annett and swiped the eighth position away.  A debris caution slowed the field with six laps to go and set the stage for a green-white-checkered finish.

However, while under caution the Fastenal Chevrolet cut down a tire and came down pit road for fresh rubber.  Newman emerged from pit road and took the final restart in 13th position. There he remained until the race ended under caution two laps later.

“It’s a little disappointing for us,” Newman said after the race. “The Fastenal crew has brought great cars to the racetrack each time I’ve driven for them, but we just don’t have the finishes to show for it. We just haven’t had things fall our way and tonight was another one of those nights. We cut a tire down right before the field took the final restart and that was it for us. We just needed a little more luck tonight.

“It’s been a blast working with Campe and the guys at JRM. I’ve had a lot of fun running these four races for them, and I wish them good luck for the rest of the season.”
