Edwards is Seeded Seventh in the Chase for the Sprint Cup after Richmond
Richmond, Va. (Sep. 7, 2014) – Edwards started from 10th position and fought a very tight Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Ford Fusion the entirety of the 400 laps on the .750-mile D-shaped oval at Richmond International Raceway. The crew made several wedge and trackbar adjustments, and made two strategy wave around calls to gain a couple laps back, but to no avail. Edwards ended up four laps down in 22nd position when the hard fought race ended.
“First of all, Congrats to Ford for having five Fords in the Chase,” stated Edwards. “That was an awesome run by Brad (Keselowski) and those guys. Congrats to Greg (Biffle) for making the Chase. I know Greg and he said that was the toughest thing he’s ever done and I’m telling you it had to be because we were struggling. We just missed the setup. A year ago we won this race with our Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes Ford and we went on to finish last in the Chase. Hopefully, tonight’s poor performance will bode well for the final 10 races.”
The No. 99 car was fast in practice and qualifying. Edwards reported early in the race that the car was loose off and snug in the center so during the first yellow flag on lap 50 for a competition caution Crew Chief Jimmy Fennig called for trackbar and air pressure adjustments. Edwards pitted again on lap 125 for the second caution from the 18th position to pull a right rear rubber, tires and fuel. The crew wasn’t able to remove the rubber and only was able to change the right side tires. Edwards had to come back into the pit for left side tires. Edwards had dropped to 20th when green flag racing resumed on lap 130. By lap 185 Edwards had gone a lap down. The No. 99 crew made trackbar and air pressure adjustments during a green flag pit stop on 226. When the field cycled through Edwards had dropped to 22nd and was now two laps down.
The third caution came out for debris and Edwards stayed out to take the wave around to get one lap back. He was passed again by the leader on lap 296 and was two laps down again in 22nd. By lap 306 Edwards had dropped to 26th and was three laps down. A fourth caution was called on lap 329 for a spectator climbing the fence, and Edwards now in 23rd stayed out to take the wave around again. Green flag racing resumed on lap 336 and he had moved into 22nd and two laps down. The race stayed green to the end and on lap 398 Edwards was passed by the leader two more time. He was scored four laps down in 22nd when the checkers flew.
