Edwards Wins Pole, Scores Top-10 Finish in the Sam’s Town 300
Las Vegas, Nevada. (March 5, 2011) – Carl Edwards won the Coors Light Pole Award for the Sam’s Town 300 in the No. 60 Roush Clean Tech Ford Mustang.
Edwards won the first pole for the Mustang brand since entering the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Edwards claimed his 22nd pole in 214 NASCAR Nationwide Series races (tied for 5th most all-time).
“That was a great run, we were screaming fast out there,” Edwards said after his qualifying run. “Like I said before, this Mustang deserves to be in victory lane today. It was crazy fast and it looks so cool out there. Putting it on pole for the first time is cool.”
Edwards had a strong Ford Mustang and led the field for a total of 68 laps. The No. 60 team nailed the set-up for the car and only had to make slight air pressure and track bar adjustments to keep Edwards near the front of the field.
Edwards took the lead on lap 144 with an impressive four wide pass to take the lead away from Denny Hamlin. “I wasn’t about to lift on that one,” Edwards said.
Edwards relinquished his lead on lap 188, when he came to pit road for two right side tires and fuel. When he returned to the race track, he was in the ninth position and worked himself up to the sixth position by the end of the race.
“These guys did a really good job,” Edwards said. “I wondered if those guys were going to stretch it from that stop and they did. I did all I could and my guys did all they could. We made the right decisions on the set up and hindsight is easy to say we should have stopped but if we had gotten a caution at the end we would have won this thing by a mile. That is racing though.”
Carl and the No. 60 team have a week off before heading to Bristol, Tenn., for the Scotts EZ Seed 300 which will be broadcast on ESPN at 2 p.m. ET.
