Edwards Rallies for Eighth Place Finish Under the Lights at Charlotte Motor Speedway

October 11, 2014

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 11, 2014) – A second week of late race strategy calls by crew chief Jimmy Fennig puts Edwards and the No. 99 Fastenal team in their best position of the 334-mile race.  On lap 327 the eighth caution flag flew and Fennig advised Edwards to stay out and he moved from 16th up to ninth on the 1.5-mile oval.  Edwards battled through the restart and green-white-checkered finish for a very important eighth place finish and his 13th top-10 of the season at Charlotte Motor Speedway and is now fifth in the Sprint Cup Chase Points.

“It was a heckuva a green-white-checker and I hope the fans enjoyed that,” stated Edwards.  “It was pretty fun for us.  We had a good finish for our Fastenal Ford.  It was a big weekend.  We appreciate all the fans coming out here.  It’s fun racing here at Charlotte and now we get to go to Talladega and have a little fun.”

Edwards started the only night race in the Chase under the lights on the 1.5-mile track from the 10th spot.  He fought loose conditions through eight cautions and averaged between 11th and 18th through the majority of the race.

On lap 218 Edwards was passed by the leader Kevin Harvick and went a lap down.  The fourth caution flag flew on the next lap and Edwards got back on the lead lap as the recipient of the “Lucky Dog”.  Edwards reported that he had no grip and was still very loose.  Fennig called for huge changes, air pressure, a shim and a trackbar adjustment.  Racing resumed on lap 226 and the team was in the 18th position.

Edwards gained a point when he led a lap on lap 315 during green flag pitting.

Fennig’s late race strategy call for Edwards to stay out put them in their best position of the race.  The eighth and final caution of the race set the stage for a very exciting restart and green-white-checker finish.   Edwards started in ninth, but when he crossed the start/finish line in eighth he was able to capture his 13th top-10 of the season and moved to the fifth place position in the Sprint Cup Contender round for the Chase.

Edwards and the No. 99 team travel to Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 19, 2014 for the GEICO 500. Race coverage starts at 2:00 pm EST on ESPN.
