Edwards Finishes Ninth at Texas Motor Speedway

November 2, 2014

FORT WORTH, TX. (Nov. 2, 2014) –Jimmy Fennig called great strategy and Edwards dug deep clawing his way from two laps down in 30th position, gaining 8 spots during two wild Green-White-Checker restarts at the end of the 334 lap race at Texas Motor Speedway to finish ninth when the checkered flag flew. Edwards is currently tied for fifth in the points standings, only one point behind fourth.

“We got super luck there at the end and my guys never quit,” stated Edwards. “I am so proud of my guys. I have no idea where we are at in points but we certainly finished better than we should have tonight. It was a great night when for a while it didn’t look like it was going to be. We get to move on to Phoenix now and we will know what we have to do there. We will take it. My guys didn’t quit and I know they won’t quit and we are going to go next week and go for this thing.”

Edwards started 11th, but immediately started falling back on lap 9 reporting his Aflac Ford was just too darn tight.  The first caution flag flew for debris on lap 42 and Edwards had fallen back to 18th

Edwards was passed by the leader Jimmie Johnson on lap 102 while in P-24 and went down a lap.  He advised that his Ford was still super tight, especially in turns 3 and 4. The No.99 Aflac team made huge adjustments over the next 63 laps.

On lap 165 Edwards was passed again by the leader Jimmie Johnson and put down a second lap while in P-23.

Crew chief Jimmy Fennig’s strategy call was to stay out on lap 222 during the fourth caution and take the wave around to gain one lap back.

Through four more cautions, several more trackbar and air adjustments and over 130 laps, Edwards had fought six other cars a lap down to position himself for the “Lucky Dog”.  On lap 295 he was in 25th position and back on the lead lap.

The Aflac team never gave up and fought tooth and nail over the end of the race through two green-white-checkers. As the dust cleared in overtime at the 1.5-mile oval Edwards had forced his Ford Fusion into the top-10 and finished ninth when the checker flag flew.

Edwards and the No. 99 Fastenal team travel to Phoenix Raceway for the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 on Sunday, November 9.  Race coverage starts at 3:00 pm EST on ESPN.
