Clauson and Fastenal Team Earn 11th-Place Start at Kansas, Finish 21st
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (September 27, 2008) – Bryan Clauson and the No.40 Fastenal Team earned an 11th-place start for the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Kansas Speedway this past Saturday. The strong start was quickly sidetracked by a loose-handling race car and two poorly-timed cautions, but the No.40 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) team overcame the multiple setbacks to bring the Fastenal Dodge across the finish line in 21st place.
Just a few laps after the green flag waved for the Kansas Lottery 300 on Saturday, Clauson radioed his team to report the car was too loose and lacking grip. Luckily, a yellow flag waved on lap 15 which gave Crew Chief Brad Parrott and team the time they needed to top the car off with fuel and to make rear end chassis adjustments to try to improve the No.40 car’s grip on the race track. Racing resumed on lap 20 with the Fastenal Dodge scored in 20th place.
Clauson radioed soon after the field returned to green to say the car was still loose and lacking grip on the 1.5-mile oval. Fortunately, another yellow waved on lap 29 which meant the team had another chance to improve the car’s handling. They pitted for four tires, fuel and air pressure adjustments, and as racing returned to green on lap 34 the No.40 was listed in 22nd place.
From there, Clauson and team proceeded to advance forward, racing up as high as 14th by lap 51. Then, the day seemed to turn around on the team as two green-flag pit stops, on laps 87 and 151, were both quickly followed by very untimely yellow flags on laps 92 and 154. The cautions landed the No.40 Fastenal Team three laps off the lead lap and with little time left to make up for the lost positions in the 200-lap competition. Still, the CGRFS team didn’t give up and stayed out of trouble to call it a day in 21st place.
The top-25 finish bestowed Clauson the Raybestos® Rookie of the Race for sixth time this season and advanced the No.40 CGRFS NNS team up one position in the overall owner standings, moving them into 19th place. With five NNS races left to run in the 2008 season, the Fastenal Team is only 281 points away from the top 15.
The Fastenal Team will take next weekend off with the rest of the NNS teams while the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Talladega Superspeedway. The NNS teams will return to racing Friday, October 10, at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The race is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET with live coverage on ESPN2.
Bryan Clauson: “We struggled all day and never really figured out the problem. I don’t know if we could have stayed on the lead lap. Those leaders were coming pretty quick behind us. We just caught a bad break catching those yellows right after we pitted. That put us two down and then lost another one there at the end. It was a tough day for our Fastenal Dodge. In two weeks, we’re going somewhere we really like to run [Lowe’s Motor Speedway]. We really need that and hopefully we can get a good finish there.”
